Statement attributable to Chief Executive Officer Justin Hanney:
In line with State Government guidance received last night, the City of Melbourne will temporarily suspend parking restrictions and fees in green sign parking bays across the municipality during stage four restrictions.
Officers will continue to enforce restrictions for red sign parking bays including:
o disability parking spaces (for vehicles without a permit)
o no stopping areas
o tow-away clearways
o loading zones
o any other case where a vehicle creates a risk to public safety or access (whether in a green sign or red sign parking bay).
We are working with the State Government to have commercial car parks re-opened to take pressure off on-street car parking.
We understand that these restrictions will also impact our residents using residential permit zones and we will continue to advocate on their behalf.
Parking officers are considered essential workers under State Government definitions and will continue to be visible on our streets. They play an important role in managing public safety and road access for residents, essential workers and emergency service vehicles.
We ask everyone to be mindful of the importance of vehicle turnover to support people needing to access essential services and businesses.
The City of Melbourne has issued a further 5000 temporary parking permits to frontline emergency workers involved in the response to COVID-19.
In total, 15,000 temporary permits are being issued to frontline workers. The distribution of passes to eligible frontline workers is being handled by their employers.
