Ten charged in South Mebourne operation targeting bail offences

Police have charged ten people in an operation targeting those who have allegedly failed to appear in court in relation to assault, car theft and drug related offending.

Following enquiries, South Melbourne uniform police – with assistance from the Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit and the Prahran Divisional Response Unit – searched 15 addresses inside a housing unit complex on Park Street, from about 8am on Tuesday 17 October.

The operation resulted in the arrest of nine people – six men aged between 25 and 47, as well as three women aged between 22 and 52 – for offences against the bail act; including failing to appear in court for alleged drug, assault and theft of motor vehicle offences.

Several people allegedly illegally squatting after wrongfully evicting tenants were also removed from the premises. Police had the locks changed and returned the unit to their rightful tenant.

Anyone with other information that could assist police with their investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Quotes attributable to South Melbourne Uniform Senior Sergeant Travis Costelow:

“This operation was aimed at those who have previously been charged with offences, and allegedly failed to appear in court to face those charges.

“Operations like this illustrate that people who commit crimes and think they can hide from the law are mistaken, and we will ensure they are held responsible.

“Police were also made aware that some tenants were being forcefully removed from their residence with the use of intimidation or having unwanted house guests not leaving their units for extended periods of time.

“Everyone has the right to not only be safe, but feel safe, in and around their home; we will not tolerate those who make residents feel otherwise.”
