Tenders open for indoor multi-sport facility

Jane Howlett,Minister for Sport and Recreation

The Tasmanian Government is calling for tenders for the design, planning and oversight of construction of a $20 million indoor multi-sport facility in Glenorchy.

The new facility will provide fit-for purpose, multi-use courts and sports facilities for a range of sports including futsal, netball, basketball, volleyball and gymnastics. The facility will also provide multi-use rooms for grassroots sports and community activities.

This new $20 million facility is an important component of the larger redevelopment project of the Derwent Entertainment Centre, which is being brought up to NBL standard in time for Tasmania’s entry into the National Basketball League in 2021-22.

The new multi-sport facility will meet the growing needs of the community and encourage more Tasmanians to participate in sport.

The Project team within the Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation has consulted with the community via the peak bodies which have sent a strong message that the facility must be accessible, inclusive and affordable to all members of the community.

Community consultation on how the multi-use rooms may be operated will take place over the coming months.

Construction on the multi-sport facility is set to commence in September 2021, with the facility expected to be completed in July 2022.

Tenders are being advertised in today’s Mercury, Examiner, Advocate, Age and the Australian newspapers.
