Nine experienced and emerging NT screen practitioners will be given a platform to share their unique stories, through the latest Screen Territory Funding program round.
The Territory Labor Government has provided $66,418 in story development, through the second round of the 2022-23 program.
$30,000 has been awarded to 6 projects, each receiving a $5000 share, in Story Development Seed Funding including:
· Samantha Laughton to develop Born and Bred – The King Igoda Story – about a top tier bred stallion trained in the remote Central desert in 1918 before taking out the iconic Melbourne Cup
· Sean Guy to develop Darwin Superhero Comedy – a story that follows superhero liaison Chloe, as she saves Darwin while stopping a natural disaster
· Laurens Goud/Trade Creative Media to develop From the Silence Came the Music – a documentary that charts the unique history and people of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra following the devastation of Cyclone Tracey
· Kate Wyvill: to develop Going Troppo, a comedy series that features a young family who leave the city lights to move to Darwin
· Bonny Scott: to develop Queers of the Desert, a celebration of queer life in the heart of Australia; and
· Elwynn Jones: to develop Venator and the Fireball Crystal a werewolf fantasy set in the Australian outback.
A further three projects have been supported with $36,418 awarded in Story Development Project Funding including:
· Tom Lawrence of Ten 4 Media P/L for Cult Cars Season 1 – a series filmed in some of Australia’s most epic locations and features a Land Cruiser journey to set a world record in Darwin
· Erica Glynn to develop Language of Birds, a family drama about a young woman who lands unannounced in a remote Aboriginal community to find her birth mother; and
· Rebecca McLean to develop Mulga Bore Hard Rock Band – Journey of a Lifetime, an insight into a small Central Australian school that works closely with the community resulting in huge success.
The 2022-23 Screen Territory Funding Program has also provided travel support grants including $23,370 to support 8 NT filmmakers attend the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC) 2023 in Melbourne from 5-8 March 2023, with one of the 8 applicants, Bridget May also supported to attend the Screen Producers Australia (SPA) Conference – Screen Forever set to take place in the Gold Coast in May 2023.
