The Cube Wodonga is preparing to celebrate ten years of entertaining, informing and engaging thousands of fans in a decade of great events and shows.
Since opening in August 2012, The Cube has hosted 3,916 events including 231 shows, 789,473 visitors, and sold 142,143 tickets, with a door count of 670,412.
It’s been a star-studded line-up, despite the challenges of COVID-19, and now it’s time to celebrate.
A family event will be held on August 27 from 10am to 12pm and the community is invited to join the celebrations.
Hosted by Natasha Quinn, the event will feature a circus performance, a drumming workshop, a magic show, live music, craft, group VR, giant games and of course, cake.
As part of the celebrations, the popular Cube Sessions program will return from 6pm to 9pm.
With host Chris Pidd, the ticketed session will include music and circus performances by the Humbuckin’ Pickups, Seth Scheuner, and more.
It will be a night of fun in a cabaret setting with tickets for members at $10 and non-members $15.
Fun facts:
The name for The Cube was a variation on a community member’s suggestion.
Wodonga Council called for suggestions from the community on what to name the venue.
One response was The Culture Cube which council adapated to The Cube Wodonga.
Did you know there are 410 theatre-style seats in The Cube?
This is made up of 257 seats in the main seating bank, 69 seats in the seating pit and 84 seats upstairs.
The Cube Wodonga replaces The Wodonga Civic Centre which was built in 1971.
The civic centre served the town well and was a busy venue used for dances, celebrations, performing arts, eisteddfods, debutante balls and weddings.
The building, however, was dated with no;
- Lighting (only one worked)
- No accessibility for wheelchairs to the stage or back of house areas
- Poor quality audio (portable PA system only)
- Dated appearance, furniture and facilities (making it hard to attract events to the venue)
- Expensive and unreliable heating and cooling
Wodonga Council took over the management of the civic centre in 2005 and started to program performing arts in the venue, however, all the venue limitations meant small audiences and limited shows.
At the time a feasibility study on building a performing arts centre for the city was undertaken with lots of community and industry consultation.
Wodonga was one of the only large regional cities in Victoria without a performing arts centre.
Funding from both the state and federal governments was sought and it took seven years from conception to the opening to realise.
The Cube Wodonga is a state-of-the-art facility that attracts more than 72,000 people annually (the civic centre attracted 55,000 in its last year) and can assist the city in bidding for major conferences and events that in turn assists retailers, accommodation suppliers and local tourism.
It also means the community and visitors to Wodonga can experience quality performing arts.
