Time to listen to community on courthouse move

Tasmanian Labor

With the Public Works Committee set to meet on Wednesday to decide the fate of the Burnie Courthouse it’s time for the Liberals to listen to the Burnie community.

Acting Labor Leader Anita Dow said it was very clear that the community wanted the courthouse to remain in the Burnie CBD.

“The Burnie Courthouse needs to remain in the CBD, it’s what the business community, local residents, the council and legal professionals want,” Ms Dow said.

“It beggars belief that Minister Elise Archer refuses to listen to the community and has instead pushed forward with this project and watched over as the costs have blown out from $15 million to $40 million.

“The government is so uncaring about this project, Member for Braddon Felix Ellis didn’t even bother to show up when the Public Works Committee toured the current and proposed sites last month, abandoning his important responsibilities as a member of that committee and a local member.

“Moving the courthouse to a residential area lacks public support and it is illogical for the government to push forward with it.

“I call on the government to listen to the people, do the right thing by the Burnie community and keep the Burnie Court in the CBD.”
