Gisborne South residents can now enjoy better mobile coverage following the completion of a new Telstra tower at I.R. Robertson Reserve.
The tower, which was completed and activated on 19 August, will make it easier for residents, local businesses and visitors to make calls, send messages and access mobile services. It will also provide a stronger connection during emergencies and help people stay in touch when it matters most.
The project follows years of advocacy by the Gisborne South community and Macedon Ranges Shire Council. In 2021, Council received a petition signed by 110 people calling for better telecommunications services, with a particular focus on Gisborne South.
Mayor Cr Cassy Borthwick said the new tower was a welcome result for the community.
“For too long, many Gisborne South residents have experienced challenges with mobile coverage. The completion of this tower is a significant milestone that will improve connectivity for residents, businesses and visitors across the area,” Cr Borthwick said.
Reliable telecommunications support residents to work from home, run their businesses, stay connected with family and friends, and access important information during emergencies.
“This outcome reflects years of advocacy from the Gisborne South community. Local residents made it clear that better mobile coverage was a priority, Councils supporting advocating to help bring this project forward.
“I thank the community for their engagement, along with Telstra, Amplitel and the Australian Government for partnering to deliver this important investment in Gisborne South.”
The tower was built by Telstra and Amplitel on Council-managed land with funding coming from the Australian Government’s Peri-Urban Mobile Program. Council helped to coordinate the planning, property and community requirements needed for the build. The reserve is used by several local equestrian groups, which supported the project throughout its development.
