Townsville green waste collection begins Monday

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) has met today to confirm green waste collection will begin on Monday.

TLDMG Chair Jenny Hill said residents should make sure their green waste was on their kerbside by Sunday night.

“We are asking residents to take any green waste that is blocking safe access into or out of their homes and place it on their kerbside. Collection will begin on Monday,” Cr Hill said.

“Wooden fence palings and wooden fence panels can be taken to Hervey Range and Stuart transfer stations. Disposing of wooden fence palings and wooden fence panels is free for residents.

“Commercial operators will incur a fee.

“We know you are keen to get rid of your green waste and food waste, but we’re asking residents to please be patient as they line up at our transfer stations.

“There are powerlines and vegetation that are on roads across Townsville. I’m urging anyone driving to go slow and be patient on the roads, and to remember to give way to their right if approaching an intersection without traffic lights.”

Townsville City Council is working with Ergon and the TLDMG to bring power supply back on for its four reservoirs and 18 water sites.

Cr Hill thanked the community for its continued efforts to conserve water.

“Council is working with Ergon to restore power to our reservoirs and our water sites. Council is also undertaking structural assessments and is making priority repairs,” Cr Hill said.

“Until we’ve restored power to all of these sites, we’re asking the community to continue conserving water. This means using water for drinking, cooking, brushing your teeth, toileting and showering, but not using water on your garden or for cleaning the outside of your house.

“If we band together as a community and conserve now we’ll have plenty of water to use until the power supply is fixed for our whole water network.”
