Townsville kerbside collection made easier than ever

Make the most of Townsville City Council’s free kerbside collection service by signing up online now.

The convenient to-your-door collection service is designed to save people a trip to the tip and improve the city’s street appeal by ensuring people can book a specific date to put their large unwanted items out for collection.

Each residential property in Townsville can claim one kerbside collection of up to two cubic metres of hard waste per financial year.

Water and Waste Committee chairperson Russ Cook said booking was essential for Council to know when and where to collect a household’s waste.

“Without bookings it’s hard to tell kerbside collection from illegal dumping. That’s why we encourage locals to jump onto Council’s website to book their kerbside collection, and to place their waste out by 6am on their collection day, but no more than two days prior,” Cr Cook said.

“By sticking to bookings we’re able to make sure kerbside waste is collected efficiently in order to maintain our city’s amenity.

“Kerbside collection is for items like white goods, hot water systems, mattresses, furniture, electronic waste, bicycles, sinks, scrap iron and wood products.

“We can’t collect green waste, bricks, concrete, commercial waste, car parts, liquids, hazardous waste, gas bottles, glass and mirrors, household waste that normally goes in your residential bin or any items that may be dangerous for our truck drivers’ safety.

“If you’re unsure of what you can or can’t include in your kerbside collection, jump on Council’s website to see the full list.”

Cr Cook said items that were still in good condition shouldn’t go to waste.

“Council is committed to advancing Townsville towards zero landfill by 2030, with diversion of 60 per cent of material from landfill by 2026. This is a goal that we need to work together to reach,” he said.

“To help us get there, think about contributing to the circular economy by holding a garage sale, donating to an op shop or Council’s tip shops, or sell or give away your items online. By considering these actions you’re able to help extend the life of your item and reduce the amount of waste going into Townsville’s landfill each year.

“In the 2021/22 financial year we were able to divert 33 per cent of waste from landfill, and I know we can keep this good work up into the future if we work together.”
