Townsville to shine as thousands flock to junior netball comp

A Townsville City Council-supported junior netball competition is set to put the city centre-circle and bring thousands of visitors to the region.

Reflecting Townsville’s reputation as the Events Capital of the North, the Junior State Age (JSA) netball competition is being held at the Murray Sports Precinct from 24-27 June.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said it was a win for junior netball and for the city’s hospitality and accommodation businesses.

“It’s expected more than 5,800 out-of-town visitors will be coming to Townsville for the event and they will all be spending money at our local cafes, restaurants, retailers and hotels,” Cr Soars said.

“Council voted to support the event coming to our region during March’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

“People will be visiting our city and helping to stimulate the local economy while also getting to experience some of our world-class attractions and destinations.

“It is also a great opportunity for Townsville’s best young netballers to play against some of the top young talent from around Queensland and to do it in front of their families and friends.”

The Netball Queensland-run event will feature a tent city and chill-out zone for people to enjoy entertainment, food and drinks over the four days.

Netball Queensland CEO Kate Davies she was thrilled the JSA competition was coming to Townsville.

“This tournament will showcase the incredible talent of young netballers from right across our state with approximately 3,000 association representatives, including players, managers, umpires, and coaches descending upon Townsville, ensuring the city will be buzzing with energy and excitement for four action-packed days,” Mrs Davies said.

“We would like to express our appreciation to the City of Townsville for their support.

“Council’s commitment to fostering sports and community engagement is commendable and we are thrilled to collaborate with them to bring this competition to the city.

“It is particularly exciting for Netball Queensland to have this event hosted in north Queensland because the region has a rich netball tradition and a strong netball community.

“We are so pleased to have the opportunity to showcase the talent and enthusiasm for the sport that exists in this part of the state.

“We can’t wait to witness the determination, skill, and camaraderie of the 214 girls teams and six boys teams as they take part in the competition.”

“We also want to extend our gratitude to the Townsville City Netball Association for their outstanding efforts as hosts. We are confident they will provide a memorable experience for all participants.

The Junior State Age netball competition is on from 24-27 June at the Murray Sports Precinct.
