Forty charges were laid during a large-scale traffic enforcement operation targeting dangerous driving in the state’s south-west at the weekend.
Operation Fume was conducted by officers from the South West Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, between Friday 21 May 2021 and Saturday 22 May 2021, targeting motorists making poor decisions while behind the wheel, with a focus on alcohol and drug-affected drivers.
During the operation – which took place in the Cumberland, Georges River, Liverpool City, Macarthur, Murray River and Riverina areas – 1,542 random breath tests were conducted; ten of which returned positive results.
Additionally, officers laid 40 charges and issued 49 traffic infringement notice over the two-day operation.
Traffic and Highway Patrol South West Commander, Superintendent Robert Toynton, said the number of motorists caught doing the wrong thing in such a short period is extremely disappointing.
“Drivers have been made aware that if you plan on getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, it’s highly likely you’ll encounter one of our officers and that’s the only reason a tragedy has been avoided.
“These operations are ongoing, it’s only a matter of time before those flouting the law are caught,” Supt Toynton said.
Operation Fume is a road policing operation targeting criminal and alcohol related, anti-social behaviour and road related trauma.
Similar operations are expected to continue in the future.
