Transformation of Peel transport network continues with METRONET

The $32 million Mandurah Station multi-storey car park has officially opened, providing commuters from across the Peel region with access to almost 1,900 parking bays.

The new car park has boosted the station’s parking capacity by 782 bays, providing greater public transport access for the more than 3,200 commuters that access the station daily.

The car park has been designed with features including SmartParker machines, a provision for future electric-car charging stations, and a range of security and safety measures like lighting, CCTV and duress alarms at the two lifts.

Mandurah station now has the third largest car park on the rail network, behind Rockingham (1,950 spaces) and Aubin Grove (1,949 spaces).

The car park includes a ‘floating’ metal fabrication artwork from South-West artist Ian Mutch in collaboration with Bindjareb Noongar artist Corey Ugle, which incorporates native species such as leaves from tuart trees, oblong turtles, Mulloway estuary fish and black cockatoos.

Noongar language metal stencilling saying Kaya Wandjoo Mandjoogoordup (hello and welcome to Mandurah) and Boorda (goodbye) have also been incorporated in the paths connecting the car park with the station building. This is an acknowledgement to the Noongar placename, Mandjoogoordap, which means “the meeting place of the heart”.

Work is continuing on the nearby METRONET Lakelands Station, with the installation of the precast concrete station platform walls and bulk earthworks under way at the car park. Lakelands Station is set to open in 2023.

The Commonwealth and Western Australian Governments are also collaborating to deliver a new $110 million Mandurah Estuary Bridge, which will ease congestion for the 32,000 vehicles that use the current bridge daily. Construction is expected to start in early 2023.

The Mandurah multi-storey car park was jointly funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments and supported 260 local jobs. Funding from the Commonwealth was provided through the Urban Congestion Fund.

As stated by Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP:

“The Morrison Government is getting on with delivering infrastructure projects that improve congestion and safety for commuters across Australia, making it easier for them to move around our capital cities and ensuring they get home quickly and safely.

“Under the Urban Congestion Fund, we are delivering 182 packages of work nationwide. The total number of projects that are now completed or underway nationwide is 76. By the end of 2022, more than 80 per cent of all packages are expected to be completed or under construction.

“This is just the latest example of us delivering on our commitment to progress critical infrastructure projects across the country under our record $110 billion, 10-year infrastructure investment pipeline, which is helping to drive Australia’s economic recovery.”

As stated by WA Transport Minister, the Hon Rita Saffioti MLA:

“The Mandurah multi-storey car park, combined with our METRONET Lakelands Station, will make it easier for people living in the Peel region to catch the train.

“This is the second METRONET project we have completed this year – the first being the METRONET Bellevue Railcar Facility.

“We are working to implement our two zone fare cap, which when it comes into effect in January 2022 will save public transport commuters from Mandurah, Dawesville and Lakelands thousands of dollars each year.

“We are also in planning to replace the Mandurah Estuary Bridge, with $110 million committed by our Government and the Commonwealth, which will help ease congestion for 32,000 commuters daily.”

As stated by Federal Member for Canning, the Hon Andrew Hastie MP:

“Before this project began, demand for parking at Mandurah Station regularly exceeded supply. More than 90 per cent of the car park was often full by 9am on weekdays.

“From tomorrow, Mandurah Station will have the third largest car park on the network. This will provide thousands of commuters across Mandurah and the region with better, faster access.

“The Morrison Government is investing millions of dollars into important infrastructure for our region, including the Lakelands Station and the Mandurah Estuary Bridge, in addition to this project. We’re improving the local transport network to get commuters from the Peel region home sooner and safer.”

As stated by State Member for Mandurah, the Hon. David Templeman MLA:

“Thousands of people from Mandurah and the surrounding areas use Mandurah Station every day to access the train.

“This new car park will add an additional 700 car bays, making it easier and more accessible for people to use the station.

“We are continuing to deliver on our major election commitments across the Peel region, with the new METRONET Lakelands Station under construction and planning underway on the new Mandurah Estuary Bridge.”
