Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives are today appealing for witnesses at Sunshine Railway Station following a sex assault in November last year.
It is understood the female victim, aged 28 from Bentleigh, was travelling on the Sunbury line towards the city when an unknown male boarded the train at Sunshine Railway Station about 8.15pm on 19 November.
Officers understand that after about 5 minutes, when the train was between Southern Cross Railway Station and Flinders Street Railway Station, the man exposed himself and began masturbating.
The victim left the train at Flinders Street Station as did the male and he appeared to follow her up the escalator.
Once the pair were at the concourse area of Flinders Street Station, the victim continued walking and the male loitered in the concourse area before briefly leaving the station at the Federation Square exit.
He returned a short time later and boarded a train to Southern Cross Railway Station where he exited walking west along Collins Street about 8.55pm.
He is described as slim with a muscular build and short dark hair.
At the time of the incident he was wearing a black singlet top, beige cargo pants, beige boots and carrying a black bag.
Transit Police and Protective Services Officers are urging anyone who might recognise the man or with any information to come forward and speak with police.
Officers will also be at the concourse area of Sunshine Railway Station between 9am and 11am today (14 January) and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
