Friday 28 July 2023 marked National Tree Day, and Snowy Monaro Regional Council was out in force in the southern village of Delegate with a tree-mendous program of tree-ific eco-friendly efforts.

Students from Delegate Primary School marked National Tree Day by planting two new trees in their school grounds, with the support of Graham Hope, Project Specialist with Snowy Monaro Regional Council.

These new additions to the school’s outdoor environment will provide shade and temperature regulation on the playground for years to come, and capture many tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere as they grow.

Kudos to these budding eco-heroes for their tree-mendous efforts – for themselves, their school, local wildlife, and future generations of Delegate’s youngest residents.

Coinciding with National Tree Day, rejuvenation of the recently remediated old Delegate Landfill site has begun. The site has been undergoing EPA-mandated works for several months, ensuring the contents of the disused landfill are secured and the local environment protected.

The landfill makeover saw Council teams cover the area with soil and hi-vis marker fabric, preventing rainwater from releasing contaminated leachate. The site was spread with grass seed, and future plans will see Council increase the tree coverage through new plantings, including Snow Gums.

This rejuvenation marks one of the final steps in the remediation of the Delegate Landfill site, with a barren and contaminated area now set for a bright future as a natural habitat for native flora and fauna.
