Truck driver charged after cyclist critically injured in Riverina

A man has been charged after a cyclist was critically injured in a crash near the border of NSW and Victoria yesterday.

About 10.30am on Wednesday (8 December 2021), emergency services were called to Thyra Road, near the corner of Ham Road, Moama – about 10km north of Echuca, Victoria – following reports a cyclist had been hit by a Volvo truck.

The cyclist – a 79-year-old man – was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the truck – a 53-year-old Melbourne man – was taken to Deniliquin Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers attached to the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command and the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit attended and established a crime scene.

Following his release from hospital, the truck driver was arrested and taken to Deniliquin Police Station, where he was charged with dangerous driving occasion grievous bodily harm and negligent driving (occasion grievous bodily harm). His driver’s licence was also suspended.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Deniliquin Local Court on Tuesday 8 February 2022.

Inquiries by the Crash Investigation Unit are continuing.
