Highway Patrol officers have been left shaking their heads after two drivers – one a P-plater – were caught travelling at 160km/h on the M7 and the M1 today.
About 5.40pm (Wednesday 4 March 2020), a visiting 42-year-old man from Hong Kong was driving a black Audi station wagon south on the M1 near Calga.
Northern Region Traffic and Highway Patrol officers were patrolling the 80km/h roadworks area in an unmarked vehicle when the Audi overtook the police vehicle and kept going.
Officers conducted a speed check which allegedly revealed the vehicle travelling at 162km/h.
The vehicle was stopped, and officers approached the driver to which he allegedly stated ‘Sorry’.
He was issued with a $2482 fine for exceed speed over 45km/h.
In the second incident, officers from Northern Region Traffic and Highway Patrol were travelling on the M7 at Rooty Hill in an unmarked police vehicle when a black Holden Cruze, displaying red P-plates, overtook.
The police vehicle followed as the Holden Cruze travelled at an alleged speed of 160km/h.
The vehicle was stopped, and the 18-year-old male driver was spoken to by police as he produced his P1 licence. He allegedly told officers ‘I was having a bad day’.
His licence was suspended and confiscated on the spot, and he was issued a $2482 fine for exceed speed over 45km/h.
