Under2 Coalition Secretariat deeply saddened at death of former co-chair Miguel Lifschitz

The Climate Group

We were saddened to learn of the passing of former Sante Fe Governor Miguel Lifschitz this week. He was a greatly liked and respected member of the international climate community and his loss will be felt keenly by all who knew and worked with him.

As Latin American co-chair of the Under2 Coalition for two years, Miguel was a staunch advocate not only for environmental protections but for the important role states and regions play in bringing these about. In 2018 he joined the largest ever meeting of subnational governments on climate change in San Francisco, where he welcomed 16 new members to the Coalition and emphasised the urgency of tackling today’s climate emergency.

In 2019 he also hosted the third Climate Summit of the Americas in Rosario, the capital of Santa Fe, which culminated in over a dozen Latin American regional governments signing the Declaration of Santa Fe for further cooperation in the region.

He was particularly enthusiastic about the take-up of green energy and was responsible for a number of initiatives to grow the sector in Argentina, including through the Prosumidores program.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Miguel’s family and friends as well as to the people of Sante Fe at this difficult time.
