Police responded to reports of a possible intruder at a Tarragindi home recently, only to discover the unexpected culprit was a magpie.
Officers from Upper Mount Gravatt Tactical Crime Squad were called to a Joywood Street address around 3pm after residents reported hearing movement inside their home and feared someone may have entered the property.
Officers attended and conducted a search of the house, where they located a magpie that had apparently flown inside through an open window.
With the AFL Brisbane Lions and Collingwood Magpies set to face off at the MCG in Melbourne tonight, the timing of the magpie’s appearance in Lion’s territory was certainly suspicious.
But in the end, the situation was resolved without incident.
Police say the residents did the right thing by contacting authorities when they believed an intruder may have been inside their home.
Officer in Charge of Upper Mount Gravatt Tactical Crime Squad, Senior Sergeant Murray Cumner, said although the callout had an unusual ending, police treat every report seriously.
“When a member of the community believes their safety may be at risk, we will respond and thoroughly assess the situation,” Senior Sergeant Cumner said.
“In this case, the intruder turned out to be a magpie rather than a person – which was fortunate for everyone involved.
“But the concern from the occupants was genuine and they absolutely did the right thing by contacting police.”
Police are reminding residents to secure doors and windows where possible, both to help prevent unlawful entry and to avoid unexpected visitors of the feathered variety.
