Union calls for swift legislation of engineer registration scheme

CFMEU ACT

The union representing ACT construction workers is calling on the Territory Government to push forward and introduce its proposed engineer registration scheme this year to help mitigate the risk of more structural collapses in Canberra. Minister for Sustainable Building and Construction Rebecca Vassarotti today called for feedback on the implementation of a scheme for the registration of professional engineers. CFMEU ACT Branch Secretary Zach Smith said the government’s direction was welcome, but the process needed to be expedited. “Structural collapses are a deadly risk and we’ve seen far too many of them in the ACT in recent years,” Mr Smith said. “Requiring professional engineers to be registered is a necessary safeguard and we need that scheme in place as soon as possible. “We welcome the work Minster Vassarotti has been doing in this area and hope to see legislation in place this year to prevent future accidents. “Consultation and process is important, but so too is the imperative to act swiftly to prevent further injury or death.”
