University of Canterbury endorses ChristchurchNZ’s new economic strategy | University of Canterbury

Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) is partnering with ChristchurchNZ on the Christchurch Economic Ambition to help shape a brighter and more sustainable future for Ōtautahi Christchurch and Waitaha Canterbury. The economic strategy’s 10-year priorities provide a roadmap for collaborative action between the University and ChristchurchNZ and reflects areas where the University can make significant contributions.

“As the second largest employer in Christchurch, and the leading source of future-focused graduates for Ōtautahi Christchurch and Waitaha Canterbury, UC plays a vital role in driving economic growth within the region,” says Brett Berquist, Assistant Vice-Chancellor Engagement.

“Through research, innovation, and community engagement initiatives, UC supports local businesses, fosters innovation, and creates new opportunities for economic advancement.”

UC’s programmes are aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and prepare graduates to help resolve the challenges facing communities locally and globally.

UC aligns with many of the priority areas identified in the ambition, including connecting students with real-world experiences; fostering meaningful relationships with businesses, sectors, and industries; equipping graduates with the latest knowledge and skills; and increasing opportunities for all communities by attracting diverse student populations. UC’s Business School and Centre for Entrepreneurship (UCE) plays a pivotal role in supporting business startups and ventures.

“Together with ChristchurchNZ, we are pleased to embark on this journey towards a brighter future for our region,” he says.
