Unlawful Use of a Computer Charge

Financial Crimes Squad detectives have charged a 42-year-old male employee of the Department of Education as part of an investigation into the unlawful accessing of, and unauthorised release of confidential information from a department computer system between October and December 2020.
It will be alleged the employee, who holds an administrative position in a Department of Education office, accessed the department’s computer system during this time period to access data which was not relevant to his duties. It will be further alleged this information was released anonymously to a stakeholder.
The Department referred the matter to WA Police Force for further investigation as soon as staff became aware of a potential breach.
On Tuesday 18 May 2021 detectives from the Financial Crimes Squad arrested the 42-year-old employee and executed search warrants at his workplace and residence.
A 42-year-old man from Kununurra has been charged with ‘Disclosing Official Secrets’ and ‘Unlawful Use of a Computer in Any Case’. He is due to appear in the Kununurra Magistrates Court today, Friday 11 June 2021.
