UPDATE: Critical incident underway after man dies in crash – Menai

A critical incident investigation is underway after a man died in a crash following a police pursuit at Menai today.

An officer from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command was performing speed enforcement duties on the Bangor Bypass, about 6am (Friday 16 June 2023), when they detected a Holden utility travelling above the 80km/h speed limit.

The officer pulled the vehicle over on New Illawarra Road; however, as the officer got out of the police vehicle, the ute drove away, and a pursuit was initiated.

A short time later, the ute hit a barrier on Alfords Point Road before colliding with the rear of a Toyota utility.

The driver of the Holden died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged 19.

The male driver of the Toyota was not injured.

A crime scene was established and examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

An investigation has commenced into the incident by a Critical Incident Investigation Team from Sydney City Police Area Command, under Strike Force Fitzalan.

Those investigations will be subject to an independent review.
