Vehicle theft and arson at Townsville

Townsville police are investigating the theft and arson of a vehicle at Bushland Beach yesterday afternoon.

A white Mitsubishi Triton was stolen from a Lavarack Street, Mount Louisa address around 1pm on Saturday March 19, and used to commit several property crimes in the region overnight, including the theft of a couch from a Cosgrove address.

Around 3.45pm yesterday, police were called to Marina Drive, Bushland Beach where the vehicle was found ablaze and exploded, with the two women fleeing the scene on foot.

Upon hearing the explosion, a nearby resident rang the Officer-in-Charge of nearby Deeragun Station to inform him of the incident. The officer was off duty but assisted by coordinating an immediate police response.

The resident informant remained in contact with the officer while responding crews were en-route, with the informant’s family member making a citizen’s arrest in nearby bushland with police taking one of the women into custody soon after.

Another vehicle, bearing false registration plates, and belonging to one of the women, was found nearby with a blown out tyre.

A 25-year-old woman is assisting police with their inquiries.
