Victorian Electoral Commission recommendations are in

The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) handed their Electoral structure review recommendations to the Minister for Local Government this morning.

Recommendations mean that Swan Hill Rural City Council could now be set to consist of seven Councillors elected from an un-subdivided electoral structure.

Swan Hill Rural City Council, Director Corporate Services David Lenton said Council are delighted by the final recommendation.

“Council made two submissions to the review to support retaining our total number of Councillors at seven with an un-subdivided electoral structure – we are thrilled that the final report supports Council’s view.”

“A new un-subdivided structure would provide a greater opportunity for the best seven candidates to be elected. It will also provide a good opportunity for the Robinvale area to have more than one person from the local area to represent them.”

Mr Lenton said that the Minister for Local Government will now decide whether to accept the VEC’s recommendations.

“Any changes will apply at the next general council election in October 2020,” he said.
