Visit to Solomon Islands

Department of Defence

Today I will travel to Solomon Islands to represent Australia at events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal and the 80th anniversary of the sinking of HMAS Canberra.

I will be joined by Australia’s Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond AM Royal Australian Navy.

Representatives from the Governments of the United States, Japan and New Zealand will also participate in commemorative events.

Australia is Solomon Islands’ largest development partner, supporting all areas of society and the economy. We value our position as Solomon Islands first security and development partner of choice.

I look forward to engaging with Solomon Islands ministerial counterparts and colleagues and listening to Solomon Islands views on our shared challenges and opportunities, including in the security, health and education sectors.

I will also meet with labour mobility stakeholders and business leaders. I look forward to meeting with Solomon Islands athletes and officials engaged in preparations for the 2023 Pacific Games, with Australia’s support.

I will visit the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Hells Point explosive ordnance disposal facility that we are upgrading with Solomon Islands. This underlines the ongoing Australian support to Solomon Islands to address the devastating legacy of unexploded WWII ordnance.
