Vivid: South Australia’s premier illustration and animation exhibition

From hand-drawn illustrations to animation embedded in augmented reality, a realm of wonder is ready to explore at VIVID, South Australia’s premier illustration and animation exhibition, opening tomorrow The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre‘s Kerry Packer Civic Gallery.

Presenting the latest creations from UniSA‘s graduating Bachelor of Illustration and Animation students, the exhibition features a rich and diverse range of artwork that shows the application of pictorial storytelling to a broad range of contexts, media formats and industries.

Exhibition co-convenor and program director of UniSA’s Bachelor of Illustration and Animation David Blaiklock, , says the this year’s exhibition highlights a resurgence of the illustration and animation fields equated with the Golden Age of Illustration during the early 1900s.

“Illustration and animation are booming across the world with huge demands for the unique skills and expertise of creative practitioners who have the ability to imagine, empathise, communicate and design with static and moving pictures,” Blaiklock says.

“Illustrators and animators are at the forefront of this change because they have the unique ability to visualise ideas and stories into pictures – leading, enabling and guiding the production of astonishing projects for movies, games, animation and publishing.

“Fuelled by the evolution of mobile technologies and driven by the growth of digital streaming and online entertainment platforms, the race is now on to secure the services of creative practitioners who can produce, plan, and deliver stimulating, visually evocative stories.

“VIVID is a physical representation of just how talented and creative our next-gen artists really are. Whether it’s whimsical illustrations, experimental anime, graphic novels or editorial art, this exhibition will delight and amaze.”

VIVID is open from 1 December – 21 December 2021 and is available for viewing between 9am – 5pm on weekdays and until 6pm on Thursdays.
