Western Australians are encouraged to dust off their helmets, pump up their tyres and give bike riding a go during WA Bike Month.
Held from 1 to 31 October, Bike Month is Western Australia’s annual celebration of bike riding for transport, fun and a healthier lifestyle.
The festivities were launched today at the Big Bike Month Blast Off celebration held at Mindeerup, kicking off four weeks of events to encourage people of all ages and abilities to ride more often.
During WA Bike Month, applications will also open for the popular Western Australian Bicycle Network Grants Program.
As part of the program, up to $8 million will be provided to local governments for the design and construction of safe walking and riding infrastructure, increasing opportunities for Western Australians to choose active transport to move around the State.
For the first time, a new grant category will be available as part of the program. Six local governments will be awarded an Active Travel Officer grant to employ a dedicated staff member to deliver bike planning and infrastructure projects and implement initiatives to encourage their community to walk and ride.
This year, the State Government announced a record $347 million investment in cycling infrastructure over the next four years, which will continue to improve safety and bike network connectivity in WA.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
“Riding is a great way to travel short distances, such as going to the shops or the train station. It is an enjoyable way to get some exercise, see more of your community and it also helps take cars off the road.
“Our Government is facilitating a record $347 million dollar investment in active transport infrastructure around WA over the next four years, creating a more connected cycling network making it easier than ever for us to get around on our bikes.
“The $8 million awarded as part of the WA Bicycle Network Grants Program will support local governments to enhance recreational, commuter and tourism riding and walking experiences for residents and visitors to the State.
“It is just one way we are working collaboratively with local government to ensure our active transport infrastructure is safe and accessible for people of all ages and abilities.
“I encourage everyone – from experienced riders to those who may be getting on the bike for the first time – to participate in a WA Bike Month event in their area and share their #ridetogetherwa moment this October.”
