WA innovator named evokeAG 2024 Future Young Leader

  • Weed detector developer Guy Coleman WA’s evokeAG. Future Young Leader
  • Cook Government gearing up for evokeAG. 2024 to advance agrifood tech innovation

Western Australian researcher and developer Guy Coleman has been announced as one of evokeAG. 2024’s Future Young Leaders, ahead of the Asia-Pacific region’s premier agrifood event in Perth next year.

Mr Coleman is the architect of the Open Weed Locator project, known as OWL, which allows the public to access open-source hardware and software to develop DIY weed detectors.

OWL integrates simple green detection algorithms and 3D printing to assemble precision weed control devices, which have been mounted on robots, vehicles and even bicycles.

The open-source approach lowers barriers to innovation, enabling more farmers to develop their own site-specific weed control ideas that can be applied to other agricultural technologies.

OWL is already being used by farmers across Australia, North America, South Asia, Europe, South Africa and there’s interest in South America.

Mr Coleman, who spent much time on his father’s Esperance property, has also worked on developing lasers and built robots to aid weed control.

Guy Coleman is set to speak at evokeAG2024, a two-day event, supported by the Cook Government, which attracts more than 1,600 delegates from 20 countries.

evokeAG. 2024’s Future Young Leaders initiative provides a unique platform for Mr Coleman to inspire others to explore the opportunities in agri-tech.
