Walk this way for free Southern Cross University exercise program

Southern Cross University is seeking participants for a free program that explores the physical and mental benefits of walking more.

If you are aged 18-69 and are currently inactive or walking fewer than 5000 steps per day, you may be eligible for the six-week program offered under the guidance of Southern Cross University researchers.

Dr Scott Goddard of the Faculty of Health is leading the study, which will take place at the University’s Coffs Harbour and Gold Coast campuses.

“Walking is a fantastic form of exercise and most people are aware of the physical benefits of regular walking,” said Dr Goddard, who is part of the University’s Physical Activity, Sport and Exercise Research (PASER) theme.

“There are substantial mental health benefits too, particularly to relieve stress and promote feelings of wellbeing and competence. The results of walking can also lead to better nutrition and lifestyle habits.

“This is especially important for people who have become inactive in their lives, and whose health may be suffering as a result. Through our study, people will be able to access a free program which includes individualised face-to-face and online support.”

Study details

  • Participants aged 18 to 69 years and currently inactive or walking fewer than 5000 steps per day.
  • 10-week study: 6-week health program, with follow-up after 4-weeks. Comprises in-person (at Coffs Harbour or Gold Coast campus) and online sessions.
  • Places in the program are limited.
