City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon will tackle an 80 kilometre walk in honor of disability awareness later this year when she completes the Mayor’s Walk for Disability.
The event, which runs from Saturday 14 – Saturday 21 September, will raise much needed funds for supported accommodation for adults with a disability who are in the care of their ageing parents or carers, and awareness for people in Casey who live with a disability, as well as their carers.
It will also be an opportunity to showcase the services and support that the City of Casey provides to people living with a disability and their carers.
Throughout the event, the Mayor will walk 10 kilometres per day starting at Livvi’s Place in Lyndhurst and finishing at the Doveton Show.
In the lead up to this, Cr Stapledon will participate in public training sessions each Tuesday morning at different locations across Casey.
This weekly ‘Walk and Talk with the Mayor’ will be an opportunity for community members to join the Mayor and have a chat about local issues along the way.
Cr Stapledon said the event shines a spotlight on a topic very close to her heart and she hopes the community will get behind this very worthwhile cause.
“I believe that every person, no matter what their ability, should have the right of passage to leave home and to live in their ‘forever’ home that is safe, homely and a place to live their best life,” she said.
Having hosted the same event during her last Mayoral term in 2013, Cr Stapledon is hoping for another successful campaign.
“I would love to see people from all areas of the community get behind this cause, as not only is this something dear to my heart, but the challenges faced by people who live with a disability, as well as their carers, is something everyone should be aware of,” she said.
“Raising money for supported accommodation for people who live with a disability will ease the pressure on not only them but their loved ones as well.”

Each week, locations for the Mayor’s training sessions will be released the Monday before, and Cr Stapledon is hopeful that a large crowd will join her and her fellow Councillors over the next two months.
