Police have recovered treasured war medals after they stopped and spoke to a man in Broken Hill when he was seen urinating in public yesterday.
Officers attached to Barrier Police District saw a 43-year-old man allegedly urinating in public at the corner of Blende and Garnet streets about 8.45am (Tuesday 28 December 2021), and spoke with him, and a 19-year-old man who was with him.
During a search of the men, police located jewellery and what they will allege to be house-breaking implements.
Further inquiries led officers to a home in Williams Street which had been broken into and ransacked with possessions – including jewellery and World War II medals – missing.
Acting on information, police then went to a vacant property on Sulphide Street where they recovered items believed to have been stolen, including World War II medals.
The men were arrested taken to Broken Hill Police station where they were charged.
The younger man has been charged with nine offences including, break, enter steal, possess housebreaking implements, attempt dispose property theft, goods in custody (five counts), carry cutting weapon upon apprehension, and breaching bail.
The older man has been charged with four offences including attempt dispose property theft, goods in custody, behave in offensive manner in public, and breaching bail.
Both have been refused bail to appear in Bathurst Local Court by AVL today (Wednesday 29 December 2021).
