Police are warning the local community to be on the alert for fake fundraising pages created in the wake of the fatal crash at Wellington last week.
Officers attached to Orana Mid Western Police District have launched an investigation after a man reported he’d been implicated in a scam involving fraudulent Facebook accounts purporting to be him.
Police have been told the man, a local country music singer, had used his official public Facebook profile to promote a GoFundMe page created following the death of two boys, aged six and seven, at Wellington on Tuesday 5 January 2021.
Fake Facebook accounts have subsequently been created under the name of “Jason Owen”, which appeal for donations to bank accounts not connected with the legitimate fundraiser.
It is not known how many people have fallen victim to the scam and police are urging anyone who fear they may have been involved to come forward.
