Waste centre to reopen to public

The City of Launceston will progressively reopen its Remount Road Waste Centre to the public from Wednesday, April 22.

Mayor Albert van Zetten said the Council had made a number of operational changes at the waste centre to enable staff and users to safely adhere to the social distancing provisions announced by the state government last month.

Mayor van Zetten said due to those provisions, the number of staff working in the weigh station at any one time has been reduced.

“This means there could be some delays with vehicles moving in and out of the centre and I would ask people to be patient at this time,” Mayor van Zetten said.

At this stage, both the Uptippy shop and the recycling centre will remain closed.

Users will also need to maintain social distancing when unloading their vehicles on the ‘walking floor’ inside the centre.

“This means instead of having one vehicle per allotted space, there will be one vehicle every second space so we can maintain that safe, 1.5 metre distance,” Mayor van Zetten said.

All transactions at the centre will need to be made using contactless payment, such as EFTPOS. Current tip vouchers from the West Tamar and City of Launceston councils can still be used, but due to safety concerns, the pensioner smart cards cannot be accepted at this stage.

“I would also strongly encourage those people planning on using the centre now it has reopened to use common-sense and ask themselves ‘is this trip genuinely for essential purposes?’,” Mayor van Zetten said.

“All of our households still have access to their regular rubbish, recycling and FOGO collection services and I would urge people to use those services first before visiting the waste centre.

“And if you do have a lot of general household rubbish laying around and you can’t or don’t want to travel to the waste centre yourself, there are a number of commercial operators in Launceston, as well as the Council, who will pick up that extra rubbish from home for a small fee.”
