We’ve got whale-y good news!

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Global whale conservation efforts have been strengthened thanks to new funding.

The Australian Government has contributed $800,000 to the International Whaling Commission (IWC), the global body responsible for the conservation and management of whales.

This funding will help build the IWC’s whale conservation and research expertise, including collaborative efforts in the IWC’s Southern Ocean Research Partnership. Introduced by Australia in 2009, the partnership uses non-lethal scientific methods to conserve and manage whales, dolphins and porpoises.

Australia is a world leader in non-lethal research on cetaceans and other marine mammals. Our leadership has contributed to a whaling-free Southern Ocean and a decline in commercial whaling around the world.

Australia’s Commissioner to the IWC, Dr. Nick Gales, is the Vice Chair for the organisation until 2024.
