Visitors planning a trip to one of Sydney’s national parks this long weekend are urged to take extra care and be aware of park conditions and widespread closures.
The recent wet weather has forced the temporary closure of large parts of Royal National Park and many walking tracks across Sydney’s northern parks and reserves.
Anyone thinking about visiting a national park this weekend is urged to consider their need to travel and to check NPWS Alerts web page before they leave home.
Wattamolla Road and Precinct and Garie Road are currently closed so there is no beach access in these areas.
The Coast Track remains open but a landslip at Little Garie Point means that it is not possible to walk the full length of the track.
Bent’s Basin State Conservation Area and Cattai National Park are closed, including all picnic areas and campgrounds.
Some walks across Kur-ring-gai Chase, Lane Cove and Sydney Harbour National Parks are also closed as recent rains have made tracks slippery and potential dangerous.
While all NPWS Visitor Centres are currently open, they may be forced to close at short notice if impacted by wet weather.
Visitors should also be aware that soaking rains increase the risk of tree fall due to saturated soils and should not shelter or camp under trees.
Creeks and rivers may also rise if the rain persists and may have strong currents.
On some beaches, erosion has resulted in steep sand scarps which can collapse unexpectedly and should be avoided by park visitors.
People must not enter closed areas.
