What happens to your recycling: Bayside

Have you ever wondered what happens to the food or garden organic waste that you drop into your red-lidded Garbage and Organics Recovery Bin (GORB)?

This bin acts as an organics recovery bin and the material is sent to a Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) facility.

This organic material (food scraps or grass clippings) is mechanically extracted and turned into a compost that is used to rehabilitate a Tailings Dam located on an old mine site.

This system diverts up to 40% or 18,000 tonnes of food and garden organics from landfill per annum.

Additionally, the former City of Botany Bay residents have the availability of a Garden Organics (GO) or green waste bin for their garden waste which is recycled.

Council is working to harmonise existing services across the entire amalgamated local government area and a Garden Organics (GO) or green waste bin will be available in the former Rockdale City Council area in 2023/2024.

This harmonisation initiative will see Bayside Council transition to a Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) system by 2030. A FOGO bin combines food scraps and garden organic waste.

Council also provides twenty-two (22) recycling drop off events at the Bexley and Botany Depots throughout the year that accept Garden Organics. These organics are recycled at a source separated facility and made into compost.

Garden Organics can also be presented for collection during scheduled and paid on call clean up services where this material is extracted at Transfer/Sorting facilities to be recycled.

Council also provides online advice on composting and worm farming to help residents reuse waste.

The Bayside Waste Services App (available on Android and iOS) makes it easier for residents to avoid and reduce waste, sort recycling and organics properly, submit waste and recycling requests, and keep track of collection and drop off days.
