What has Tasmanian Labor got against supporting more vulnerable Tasmanians into social housing?

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

Labor continues to prove that it’s only plan for Tasmania is to oppose anything that improves the lives of Tasmanians.

The stunts performed by Labor during Parliament have done nothing to serve Tasmanians who are on the social housing wait list.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street, has made no apology for having an ambitious long-term plan to find a home for those in need.

“We are proud of the work Homes Tasmania has been doing to help put roofs over the heads of more Tasmanians who are in need,” Minister Street said.

“And we make no apology for having an ambitious long-term housing plan to deliver 10,000 more social and affordable homes by 2032.

“What has Tasmanian Labor got against supporting more vulnerable Tasmanians into social housing?

“Labor can’t have it both ways – you can’t criticise the Government for the waiting list, and then criticise the Government for increasing the supply of social housing!

“The Rockliff Liberal Government has been clear about Homes Tasmania’s remit from the start.

“It was established to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to increase the homes available for social and affordable housing through whatever levers are available to them, and this included to build and acquire homes.

“Our delivery of homes for Tasmanians in the first financial year of Homes Tasmania has been almost double the record of the last Labor-Green Government in 2013.

“Not only have we succeeded in housing more Tasmanians but this remains the largest commitment and investment in social housing in Tasmania’s history. And we are proud of it.

“The ongoing efforts to see this significant investment in Tasmania’s most vulnerable derailed by the Labor party only further reaffirms our commitment to doing what matters for Tasmanians,” Minister Street said.
