The ripple effect of winning the lottery
Many lottery winners spread their generosity far and wide, while others choose to make a greater impact within their close networks.
Of the surveyed division one winners, 36% had used their prize to help family and friends. Here’s what they said:
“I immediately paid off my son and daughter’s mortgage. I also purchased a new car and provided $5,000,000 to each family to invest in their future.”
“Helping the grandchildren by investing money for each of them in an educational bond.”
“We helped each of our five children with their mortgages and made charitable donations.”
“When we bought a new car, we gave the old one to a friend.”

The good news? In Australia, lottery winnings are classified as tax-free income. That means the amount you win is the amount you’ll see in your bank account.
