WHO congratulates new UNAIDS Executive Director

The Director-General of the World Health Organization welcomes the appointment of Winnie Byanyima as the new Executive Director of UNAIDS.

“I very much look forward to working with Ms Byanyima, in her new role as Executive Director of UNAIDS on our shared objective of ending AIDS and achieving the SDGs,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Since its creation in 1996, UNAIDS has coordinated UN efforts to tackle HIV/AIDS, pioneering some innovative approaches and helping the world achieve remarkable progress, particularly in the expansion of access to treatment. However, HIV prevention remains a major challenge among many groups and in many countries.

World leaders agreed in 2015 to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. WHO is a proud co-sponsor of UNAIDS and looks forward to working alongside the Secretariat, and its new Executive Director, to achieve this goal.

“Ms Byanyima has an impressive professional background and brings deep experience and expertise to this role. She will be a great asset to the Joint Programme and to the broader international health and development community,” added Dr Tedros.
