The Winchelsea Entrance Sculptures are now complete, following the recent installation of the town’s western entrance sculpture.
The two sculptures, located on the Princes Highway, are the collaborative work of artists Ben Storch and Matthew Harding. Ben continued with the project following the sad passing of Matthew in 2018.
Eleven fan sculptures titled ‘Dawn’ mark Winchelsea’s eastern entrance (near Roberta’s Cottage) and one eight-metre high winged sculpture titled ‘Dusk’ marks the western entrance (near the Winchelsea SES).
The works complete the artists’ vision to connect the townscape and the natural environment. Lights have been installed at each site so the sculptures can be lit up at night.
Surf Coast Shire Cr Heather Wellington said they were a key part of the Winchelsea Township Beautification Project.
“I think they bookend the town with a signature vibrancy,” she said.
“A number of Winchelsea community members were involved in assessing concepts for the sculptures and in choosing the final designs. I hope that each time they see Dusk and Dawn, they are filled with pride.”
She said the project was all about enriching community pride.
“I hope the sculptures encourage people travelling through Winchelsea to stop and appreciate all its natural beauty – from the rural charm of the town centre, to the stunning scenic landscape.”
The Winchelsea Entrance Sculptures are a joint initiative funded by the Australian Government, the Victorian Government and Surf Coast Shire Council.
A community celebration to launch the sculptures has been postponed due to the coronavirus.
