The Bureau of Meteorology held a media conference today to discuss the cold snap and simultaneous heightened fire conditions occuring at the start of the NSW/ACT school holidays.

- Windy and cold conditions are expected across NSW/ACT on Friday and Saturday as a strong cold front crosses
- Snow is expected to fall overnight tonight to low-lying levels including Oberon, Orange, Crookwell, the ACT ranges and possibly around the Barrington Tops
- Snow, winds, storms and icy roads could be problematic for travellers at the start of the NSW/ACT school holidays which begin today
- Damaging winds, potentially strong enough to bring down trees or powerlines, could impact eastern areas such as the Hunter on Friday
- The wind chill factor will make it feel colder than expected. By later tonight Sydney could feel like it is between 2-5 degrees
- Thunderstorms are possible around southern NSW on Friday
- The Alpine region could receive around 40cm of snow and there could be the risk of blizzards
- Meanwhile the Far North Coast is experiencing heightened fire danger with dry, warm and windy conditions
