Winter out of his depth again – this time on hydrogen

Guy Barnett,Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction

Fresh from his disastrous foray into commercial gas contract negotiations, Labor’s Dean Winter is now attempting to influence infrastructure discussions with proponents for a Tasmanian green hydrogen hub.

What you won’t hear from Mr Winter is that earlier this month the Tasmanian Government lodged its official funding submission with the Australian Government to initiate the Tasmanian Green Hydrogen Hub Project at Bell Bay, representing a huge step forward for this emerging industry in Tasmania.

There is already significant interest in Bell Bay from some of Australia’s largest potential hydrogen producers including Fortescue Future Industries, Woodside Energy, Origin Energy and ABEL Energy and we’re proud that many of these companies have provided letters of support for our funding submission.

Bell Bay presents as a perfect location for a nation-leading renewable hydrogen hub with its advanced manufacturing zone, renewable energy availability, appropriate infrastructure, water availability and port access.

There are a range of water supply options available for proponents looking to set up Hydrogen production. We are looking to find a commercially viable and mutually beneficial solution that meets the needs of current renewable hydrogen proponents and broader industry future requirements at Bell Bay.

Once again Mr Winter has waded into commercial discussions that are beyond his understanding.

With collaboration between industry, universities, other research institutions and innovators, the Tasmanian Liberal Government is confident Bell Bay will be home to a thriving green hydrogen hub.
