Wolgan Road Storm Damage – Natural Disaster

Lithgow Council

Over the past two months, Lithgow like much of NSW has been subject to heavy rainfall, with a natural disaster now declared for the area. There has been widespread damage to the road network.

“Mostly the damage appears as potholes or roadside aggregate being deposited across the lanes.” said Council’s General Manager Craig Butler. “The Council and its staff are fully committed to the repair of this damage. However, there are two locations which have now suffered more significant damage. In addition to Cullenbenbong Road, the Wolgan Road adjacent to the Wolgan Gap has shown signs of isolated failure.”

Mr Butler added “All roads staff have been directed to attend the site. As immediate action, we are clearing the site of debris and installing barricades to block the affected lane. There has been the need to impose a 5 tonne load limit on Wolgan Road. Geotechnical specialists have also been engaged to provide Council with further advice and support in repairing the road as quickly as possible. We are working closely with Transport for NSW and Resilience NSW as well.

Mr Butler said “The safety of our community and resilience of access to remote localities remains our utmost priority. Council staff are working around the clock. We have enacted our risk management plan for the area and will conduct inspections twice daily to monitor the situation. I sincerely thank the community for their patience.
