New experiences await at Wollongong Art Gallery with the recent launch of three new exhibitions – Ballad of the Burbs by local artist Nicci Bedson, Transience Atlas by local artist Rob Howe and Popular Versus Culture by Georgia Banks.
Last Friday 5 June, the Gallery enjoyed a massive night of exhibition openings for a trio of exhibitions that will be on show during winter. The packed venue celebrated the diverse works across multiple disciplines, signifying the depth of the Gallery’s 2026 Program – from Bedson’s paintings of suburban life in the Illawarra to Banks’ take on the visual language of advertising and pop culture and Howe’s paintings that trace daily life against a backdrop of seasonal change across New South Wales.
Wollongong Art Gallery Director Dr Daniel Mudie Cunningham said: “It’s exciting to present three exhibitions that are so distinct yet deeply connected through their exploration of everyday life and contemporary culture.
“These artists invite us to reconsider the familiar — from our suburban surroundings to the images and values that shape us — and to find meaning in both the fleeting and the overlooked.”
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said the much-loved space was abuzz with many eager supporters and locals keen to get the first look at the pieces.
“The three new exciting exhibitions speaks volumes to the detailed care the Art Gallery Director Dr Cunningham and the team took to curate and present the 2026 program,” Cr Brown said.
“It truly expands our experience with various art mediums and storytelling. I encourage you to escape the cold weather at the Gallery and immerse yourself in the creative arts, and as a bonus, show your support for these talented Australian artists.”
Earlier this year, Wollongong Art Gallery launched their 2026 program that includes a diverse range of exhibitions, an engaging performance program and an exciting schedule of workshops, free artist talks and events.
