Women and girls of all ages and abilities can dig into a smorgasbord of sporting goodies when the Lake Mac Women in Sport Festival kicks off this weekend.

The annual event aims to engage more women and girls in active recreation, celebrate the excellence of sportswomen at all levels, and build confidence in personal and professional lives through the power of sport.

Sprinting out of the blocks with futsal, sailing and tennis events on Saturday 2 March, followed by the perpetually popular ‘Try a Sport Day’ on Sunday 3 March, the program is chock full of opportunities to tackle a new challenge.

Minister for Women Jodie Harrison said the NSW Government was proud to support the inclusive and encouraging festival.

“The Lake Mac Women in Sport Festival embraces the holistic power of sport, engaging more women and girls to get involved in sport and active recreation at all levels,” she said.

“From improving physical and mental health to increasing social connectivity and self-confidence, sport unlocks a wealth of avenues for personal and professional growth.

“This program is not only about grassroots participation, it’s about empowering women and girls to explore the multitude of opportunities available within the industry.”

From pickleball to ultimate frisbee and circus acrobatics, Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said there was something for everyone in the program.

“I’d encourage women and girls of all ages and abilities to take up the challenge, lace up the runners and get active as part of this fun and welcoming event,” she said.

“Off the field I’m really looking forward to hearing from some of Australia’s leading sports personalities like Liz Ellis AO, Belinda Clark AO and Chloe Dalton OAM and all about their journey as leaders in sport and business.”

Another highlight in this year’s calendar of events is a Q&A with surfing legends Pauline Menczer and Jodie Cooper following a screening of the ‘Girls Can’t Surf’ film at Warners Bay Theatre on Wednesday 6 March.
