Work will start next week on a new viewing platform overlooking Port Kembla Beach.
The platform will be on the eastern side of Port Kembla Surf Life Saving Club car park and feature a shaded deck area with seating and picnic tables. The project is part of Council’s continued upgrade work to the foreshore area from Port Kembla beach through King George V precinct to MM Beach.
It’ll also be a key link in the Grand Pacific Walk, a 60km pathway for pedestrians and cyclists stretching from the Royal National Park in the north to Lake Illawarra.
The project is supported by a $400,000 grant under the Port Kembla Community Investment Fund.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said it was exciting with a new phase of the Grand Pacific Walk in the southern suburbs and in particular Port Kembla.
“The platform will incorporate a shade structure as well as an upgrade to the car park and we will complete new kerb and guttering in the area as well as landscape works,” Cr Bradbery said.
“This platform will provide another space for people to take photos over another part of our beautiful coastline. It will also provide an accessible space for people to sit, reflect and socialise. Once this project completed it’ll be a welcome addition to this popular beach precinct, and I thank the NSW State Government for their ongoing support of this lovely suburb through the Port Kembla Community Investment Fund.”
Once finished, the platform will be approximately 16m long, 7.5m wide. The work is due to start from Monday 29 June, and is expected be completed in October, provided we get good weather. Coinciding with the platform project, we’ll also be making some improvements to the carpark, with the addition of new garden beds, installing a footpath, bins and a drinking fountain.
While works are underway, the northern car park will be closed and while the existing footpath will remain open, there might be some changes to pedestrian access for safety reasons. These will be clearly signposted.
