North Wollongong surf lifesavers will be better equipped to protect beachgoers following the commencement of the redevelopment of North Wollongong Surf Life Saving Club.
Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said the redevelopment was part of the NSW Government’s $4 million Surf Club Facility Program which will deliver a fit-for-purpose surf club with modern facilities and technology.
“North Wollongong Surf Life Saving Club provides a vital service, protecting people in the water and supporting a healthy lifestyle for members,” Mr Lee said.
“The club was one of 26 to receive a grant in the 2019-20 program and is one of several projects that the NSW Government is supporting in the Illawarra, including Warilla-Barrack Point, Garie and Bulli Surf Life Saving Clubs.”
Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock said ensuring the popular North Wollongong Beach continues to be safe and enjoyable for locals, volunteers and visitors was important.
“This project is another example of the NSW Government partnering with Wollongong City Council to deliver quality and essential community infrastructure,” Mrs Hancock said.
“The NSW Government has funded $4.2 million under its Coastal and Estuary Program to assist Wollongong City Council to build a protective seawall, designed to keep nearby buildings and community assets, including the future and newly refurbished North Wollongong Surf Life Saving Club, safe from storm events and coastal wave damage.
“It’s a fantastic outcome for the local Illawarra community who take pride in this much-loved beach.”
Member for Heathcote Lee Evans said North Wollongong Surf Life Saving Club was part of the fabric of the Illawarra community.
“North Wollongong surf life saving volunteers are on the beaches every weekend, rain, hail or shine, protecting our community,” Mr Evans said.
“It’s vital that they have modern and versatile facilities, and these upgrades enable them to keep beachgoers safe.
“I’m pleased the NSW Government provided a $309,000 grant to support the construction of modern, fit-for-purpose facilities for lifesavers.”
The $4 million Surf Club Facility Program supports the upgrade, restoration or construction of surf life saving facilities, providing grants of $30,000 – $350000 to clubs across New South Wales.
