Work finishes on Riverway boardwalk

More than five linear kilometres of walkway decking, one linear kilometre of joists and 80 linear meters of bearers have been removed and replaced as part of the works completed on the Riverway boardwalk renewal project.

Townsville City Council committed to replacing the existing wooden decking after it had reached the end of its useful life.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the $948,000 project focused on replacing the decking along some of the high-use areas of the boardwalk.

“Council used local contractor JMAC Constructions to carry out the upgrade works at sections near the park and pool,” Cr Hill said.

“Replacing the decking was an intensive job. It required deconstructing the boardwalk, preparing it for a new type of decking, installing the new decking and responsibly disposing of the old material.

“The work needed to be done. On average, 3,000 people use these sections of the boardwalk every day.

“It needed replacing before it became a hazard and injured someone.

“The new decking is made from a recycled composite material which is harder wearing and requires less ongoing maintenance.

Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said Riverway was a popular area with locals and Townsville families.

“This is one of the projects Council is investing in at Riverway to broaden the appeal and usability of the area,” Cr Rehbein said.

“Construction has started on a new library, we are upgrading parts of Riverway stadium and improving security by upgrading CCTV cameras.

“These are just some projects Council is working on as we make the space even more appealing to the community.

“It is important the correct infrastructure is in place, so areas like Riverway meet the needs and expectations of the community and ensure it is fit for purpose in the longer term.”
