World AIDS Day 2023

Department of Health

World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year to keep raising awareness about HIV and AIDS. In 2021, there was an estimated 29,460 people living with HIV in Australia, and there is currently an estimated 39 million cases around the world.

This year’s World AIDS Day theme in Australia is ‘Inclusion. Respect. Equity.’, which acknowledges these 3 fundamental principles in the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS.

In Australia, World AIDS Day is a day for the community to:

  • show their support for people living with HIV
  • raise awareness about HIV prevention, treatment and care
  • eliminate stigma and discrimination around HIV
  • remember people who have died of AIDS-related illnesses.

The best way to get involved is to attend a World AIDS Day event. There are events run across the country and virtually so that everyone can attend. Search for your state’s events on the World AIDS Day website events page, or on your local HIV/AIDS community organisation’s website.
