Yarra resident honoured at 2023 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards

Yarra City Council

Yarra City Council is delighted to share that Yarra resident, Antonio “Tonino” Bentincontri, has been honoured with a Senior Achiever Award at this year’s Victorian Senior of the Year Awards.

Held at Government House on Wednesday 11 October 2023, the event was hosted by the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC. Councillor Amanda Stone, who currently sits on the Active Ageing Advisory Committee, and other committee representatives were also in attendance to celebrate Tonino’s achievement.

At 81, Tonino is a valued leader within the Italian community in Yarra, dedicated to promoting inclusivity and bridging cultures in multicultural Australia. Having moved from Italy many years ago, he understands the challenges of adapting to a new culture and language.

Tonino has worked hard as a bilingual and bicultural guide for Italian immigrants, organising language classes, cultural events, and festivals to celebrate Italian heritage, helping to build a sense of belonging between Italian-born and Australian-born Italians.

An active volunteer and strong advocate for social justice, Tonino stands against racism, discrimination, and inequality. He actively supports initiatives that encourage diversity across Australian society, showing a true spirit of harmony and inclusiveness.

Yarra City Council is proud of Tonino’s achievements and his ongoing commitment to creating a more inclusive community in Yarra. His recognition as a Senior Achiever serves as an inspiration to the Yarra community and beyond. We extend our warmest congratulations to Tonino Bentincontri on this well-deserved award.
